According to the Wall Street Journal, AT&T Mobility Chief Executive Ralph de la Vega made it clear that, "We [AT&T] have not made any decision to implement tiered pricing," referring to plans that would charge based on how much data a customer uses rather than the unlimited plans that are popular today.
While Mr. de la Vega's statement doesn't take the notion of tiered pricing off the agenda, it does, for the time being, allow AT&T customers to rest easy.
AT&T is considering adding free Wi-Fi hot spots for its mobile customers. WiFi allows mobile users to access the Internet much faster than using the cellular network. It is also running trials of femtocells, boxes that use a home Internet connection and act as mini cellular towers in order to take significant traffic off of AT&T's wireless network, Mr. de la Vega said.
This announcement comes in the wake of a blog threat by "The Fake Steve Jobs" to cripple the carrier's network. In just a day after proposing "Operation Chokehold," the site has recruited over 3,350 members who will participate in this attack.
We would like to thank everyone who has participated in our e-mail campaign to AT&T. If you have not yet submitted your thoughts on the possiblity of tiered pricing, please do so here. Let's be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.
